Description
The unmaintained gtk2-engines-murrine is being removed from Debian. Arch Linux has also recently removed gtk2 (although gtk2 is available in the AUR).
There are only a small amount of apps in Ubuntu using gtk2 (approximate list). There is a good chance that most of those apps will be removed from Debian Testing before Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is released.
I don't know yet how far we'll go on removing gtk2 from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, but I foresee that Ubuntu 28.04 LTS will not have gtk2 at all. As long as gtk2 is in Ubuntu, I believe it is sufficient to have the Adwaita and High Contrast themes only. Therefore, I recommend that Yaru's gtk2 theme be removed from Ubuntu 26.04 LTS.
Other distros may still want gtk2 support (although other distros don't use Yaru by default. Maybe the number of people using Yaru on other distros and wanting to use gtk2 apps with Yaru is small.) I believe that the Yaru build for the gtk-common-themes Snap should still have the gtk2 theme. (That gtk2 theme could be an old version since the theme is likely not actively maintained any way.). You could add a meson option for the gtk2 theme. Or you could split the gtk2 theme to a separate repo.
Without a meson build option, this is how I disabled the Yaru gtk2 theme for Debian.
